Sigiriya

The iconic fifth century rock fortress rising from the jungle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka's must see sights.

About

About Sigiriya

Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark, an ancient rock fortress and palace rising nearly 200 metres straight out of the surrounding jungle. Built in the fifth century by King Kashyapa, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning in Asia. Climbing to the summit takes you past landscaped water gardens, ancient frescoes and a giant lion's paw gateway, to the ruins of a royal palace with sweeping views in every direction.

Highlights

Top things to do

  • Climb to the summit palace ruins
  • See the ancient Sigiriya frescoes, the famous painted maidens
  • Walk along the polished Mirror Wall
  • Pass through the Lion's Paw staircase
  • Explore the symmetrical water gardens at the base
  • Climb nearby Pidurangala Rock for the best view of Sigiriya itself
Good to know

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Early morning is the best time to climb, before the heat and the crowds.
